Balance Therapy

Balance is critical for day to day activities such as getting out of a chair and walking, bending over to put your shoes on, washing your hair, driving a car or going grocery shopping.

Just about everything you do in your daily life, whether for work or leisure requires balance control.

We don't tend to think about the need for balance until balance problems develop and cause profound disruptions in your daily life. In addition to increased risk for falls, balance disorders can shorten your attention span, disrupt normal sleep patterns, and/or cause excessive fatigue. People with balance and dizziness problems can have difficulty with even the simplest of tasks.

We are here to help. If you have experienced a recent fall, feel unsteady on your feet, have a spell of dizziness, or have other reason to believe you might have a balance problem, you should talk to your family physician. Your doctor can refer you to a qualified physical therapist like the Physical Therapy Solutions group to determine the underlying cause(s) of your balance.

In fact, Physical Therapy Solutions Inc is the only facility in the NW suburbs of Chicago with a comprehensive balance program. Assisted by the medical history provided by your doctor, the specialist will perform specific tests to determine your ability to maintain your balance, as well as your risk of falling.
Computerized equilibrium tests can evaluate the sensory and motor parts of your balance system. Sensory tests assess inner ears, eyes, and sense of touch in your feet and joints that contribute to balance control. Motor tests measure your ability to execute coordinated movements, both voluntary and involuntary, to maintain your balance. These tests will help define the cause of your balance problem and will help the balance specialist customize your treatment for maximum benefit.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

If you experience dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness, loss of balance, giddiness or loss of equilibrium, then you need to see us! Symptoms of pressure or fullness in the ear, blurred vision with movement and balance problems combined with unsteadiness indicate the need for an evaluation from our physical therapists, who specialize in vestibular rehabilitation. Our Qualified Vestibular Clinicians will perform a complete evaluation, which includes the observation of posture, balance, movement and compensation strategies to come to a conclusion about the course of treatment for you. In addition, we use infrared video Frenzel goggles for assessment and treatment of vestibular disorders.

Dizziness and Vertigo

Dizziness is a broad term used to explain how we feel when our sense of balance is not quite right. The term encompasses a variety of sensations that can mean different things to different people. If you have ever been dizzy, you may have found it difficult to describe exactly how it made you feel. Some people who report feeling dizzy say they feel as if everything is spinning around them, or as if they are spinning or turning themselves. This is what doctors usually mean when they refer to vertigo. Others describe feeling wobbly or unsteady as if they were on a boat. And still others may describe their dizziness as a feeling of "floating", lightheadedness or "giddiness".

Common Myths About Dizziness

Dizziness is one of the leading patient complaints reported to doctors, second only to lower back pain. Historically, it has been very difficult to determine the cause of dizziness symptoms, but medical advances in the last twenty years have significantly improved the diagnosis and treatment of dizziness disorders. Because dizziness and/or vertigo can be so difficult to diagnose, however, a number of erroneous "causes" are often incorrectly assigned to symptoms of dizziness.

Myth: "Your dizziness is caused by anxiety; you just need to relax."
Fact: While someone with dizziness may be feeling anxious about their dizziness, which can magnify the unpleasant sensations, anxiety is not the underlying cause for the dizziness. If you are suffering from persistent symptoms of dizziness and/or vertigo that do not go away within a reasonable amount of time, it is a sign that there is something wrong and you should consult with a qualified clinician.

Myth: "Your dizziness is caused by your imagination and it's only in your head."
Fact: While you may find it difficult to describe your symptoms to your friends, family or doctor, your symptoms should not be discounted as imaginary. Your feelings of dizziness or unsteadiness are quite real and are a symptom of an underlying problem.

Myth: "Your dizziness is just part of getting older."
Fact: This is not true. Dizziness can be the result of a number of factors including injuries, degenerative diseases and other physical ailments, as explained under "How You Control Your Balance." Elderly patients who suffer from dizziness, are not the same as their healthy, age-matched counter parts. In fact, symptoms of dizziness are not normal at any age and are a sign that there is something wrong.

Myth: "Your dizziness is simply a hormone imbalance."
Fact: Someone may have a hormone imbalance due to a variety of physical factors, which can cause nausea, fatigue, or "hot flashes", but a hormone imbalance per se does not usually result in symptoms of dizziness.

The dizziness, lightheadedness, unsteadiness or vertigo sensations you may feel are very real. Specific causes can be identified with an appropriate medical evaluation and tests conducted by a qualified clinician. The great news is that, once identified, most dizziness disorders can be successfully treated.

Fall Prevention Programs
We use NASA based technology to evaluate the sensory and motor parts of your balance system.

The key to our system is the Dynamic Posturography (CDP), a sophisticated assessment technique to objectively quantify and differentiate among the variety of complex systems involved in balance, including sensory, motor, and central adaptive. Because CDP can identify and differentiate the impairments associated with balance problems, CDP is complementary to clinical tests designed to localize and categorize medical causes of balance disorders.
More than a screening tool, CDP completes the clinical picture by:
• Identifying and differentiating specific sensory and motor impairments
• Providing objective evidence for effective clinical decisions
• Training patients via protocols tuned to the impairments specific to each individual
• Maximizing outcomes -- get patients back to their activities of daily living
• Documenting progress and treatment results

SMART Equi Test assessment protocols quantify the patient's ability to perform the balance and mobility tasks needed to stay safe and function effectively in everyday life. They provide the data necessary for accurate assessment of balance dysfunction and effective clinical management.
All NeuroCom assessments are compatible with the World Health Organization (ICDIH-2) and Nagi disablement frameworks, and have been validated by extensive scientific and clinical research.

Remember, loss of balance and mobility are NOT inevitable as you grow older. Sudden falls in older individuals are of great concern, since the incidence of balance problems is known to increase significantly with age. We can help you improve your balance!
